Eating healthy wasn’t always easy for me. When I was younger, I’d skip lunch and convince myself I’d eat later when I got home. This never worked and only made things worse. I’d get so hungry that I’d end up making terrible food choices. This cycle was all too common. When I did plan my meals and meal prep, things went much better, but I couldn’t seem to keep the habit going long-term.

Now, I can’t imagine going a day without prioritizing healthy eating. If you’ve ever struggled with making better food choices, I’m sharing my top tips to help you embrace healthy eating and stick to it.

1. Prepare, Prepare, and Prepare!

Preparation is key to success when it comes to healthy eating. If you don’t plan, it’s easy to skip your meal prep and grab something unhealthy on the go. Start by planning your meals and snacks for the week, then make a grocery list based on what you need. Schedule time for grocery shopping so it becomes part of your routine.

When you’re prepared, you’re less likely to get starving and make impulsive food decisions. Preparation is the foundation of healthy eating, helping you avoid the pitfall of ordering takeout when you don’t feel like cooking.

2. Cut Out the Obvious

Track your food intake and be mindful of what you’re consuming regularly. Identify any foods or drinks that are clearly not helping your healthy eating goals, such as processed snacks or sugary drinks. Start cutting out the obvious offenders and replace them with wholesome, nutrient-rich alternatives.

3. Recognize That It Won’t Always Be This Difficult

In the beginning, embracing healthy eating can feel like a challenge. You’re learning new recipes, discovering what you like and don’t like, and trying to make healthier habits stick. But trust me, it gets easier. Over time, preparing meals and making better food choices will become second nature.

The key is to build your healthy eating habits gradually—there’s no rush. Once you find your rhythm, you’ll never want to go back to old patterns.

4. Keep It Simple

Healthy eating doesn’t mean spending hours preparing complicated meals. Simplicity is your ally when building sustainable habits. Find meals you genuinely enjoy and can prepare quickly. Consistency is key—if you like eating the same meals throughout the week, that’s perfectly fine! Keeping it simple makes healthy eating much easier to maintain.

5. Stick to Real Foods

One of the best tips I received for improving my healthy eating habits was to shop around the perimeter of the grocery store. This is where you’ll find fresh produce, lean meats, dairy, and other whole foods.

Processed foods may claim to be “healthy,” but they’re often packed with added sugars, preservatives, and unhealthy fats. By focusing on real, whole foods, you’ll fuel your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive.

6. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is a crucial but often overlooked part of healthy eating. Drinking plenty of water supports digestion, energy levels, and overall health. Carry a water bottle with you throughout the day to make staying hydrated a habit. Proper hydration can also help curb cravings and boost metabolism, complementing your healthy eating efforts.

7. It’s Okay to Eat More—As Long as It’s Wholesome

Healthy eating isn’t about restricting yourself. Nutrient-dense foods allow you to eat satisfying portions without guilt. Compare 600 calories of junk food to 600 calories of wholesome, nutrient-rich meals—you’ll feel a world of difference.
