I’ve tried countless fad diets in the past, but none of them stuck. That was, until I tried Whole30. To be honest, I don’t think I was ever able to stick to and follow through on anything else before. Whole30 completely transformed my relationship with food. I can confidently say that nothing has shaped my current eating habits more than this program. Not only did it change my body, but it helped me understand what affects my bloating, weight, and skin.
In this post, I’m sharing the biggest lessons I learned while doing Whole30 and how it continues to impact my health today.
1. Sugar is in EVERYTHING
One of the most eye-opening lessons from Whole30 was just how much sugar is added to everyday foods. It was shocking to realize how many products—things I thought were "healthy"—were loaded with hidden sugars. Even things like condiments, bread, and snacks contain added sugar.
Learning to read labels and identify hidden sugars became a game-changer for me. Now, I make a point to avoid anything with added sugar in my diet.
2. Dairy Was Affecting My Skin (Especially Backne and Face)
Before Whole30, I had no idea that dairy was a major contributor to my skin issues, like back acne and breakouts on my face. During the program, I eliminated dairy and noticed a significant improvement in my skin within just a few weeks. No more breakouts—just clearer, healthier skin.
If you’ve struggled with skin issues and haven’t yet cut dairy from your diet, I highly recommend giving it a try. The results might surprise you!
3. Knowledge is Key to Overcoming Cravings
Cereal used to be my guilty pleasure. If you asked me what my favorite dessert was, I’d say cereal without hesitation. But during Whole30, I took a moment to look at the label of my favorite cereal on a "cheat day" and calculated the amount of sugar I was consuming in just one serving. That simple act of awareness changed everything.
Since then, I don’t even crave cereal anymore because I know how unhealthy it is. Understanding what I was putting into my body made me say "no thank you" every time, and I no longer feel the urge to reach for sugary, processed foods.
4. The Effects of Diet on Mood, Bloating, and Digestion
One of the most surprising things I learned during Whole30 was how my diet could affect my mood, cause headaches, and lead to bloating and excessive gas. I followed the Whole30 calendar closely, which explained why I felt a certain way during each phase. This made the whole process easier to manage because I knew what to expect and why I was feeling a particular way.
When I realized that certain foods were causing me to feel sluggish or bloated, it motivated me to stay on track. I didn’t want to experience those discomforts again, so I kept going.
How Whole30 Still Impacts Me Today (In a Good Way)
Even after completing Whole30, the benefits continue to impact my life. Here’s how it changed me for the better:
I Know My Body Better
After going through the Whole30 program, I have a deeper awareness of my body’s signals. I can easily identify when certain foods are affecting me, and I know what to do to feel better. If I’m feeling sluggish, bloated, or fatigued, I can pinpoint what caused it and adjust my diet accordingly.
Sugar is Still Off Limits
Now that I know the negative impact sugar has on my body, I avoid anything with added sugar. Whenever I consider trying a new product or food, I always check the label for added sugars. It’s become second nature to choose options that are free from unnecessary sugars.
I Still Use the Whole30 Cookbook
The Whole30 cookbook has become a staple in my kitchen. I still use it for meal ideas and inspiration, especially when I want to cook something wholesome and nourishing. The recipes are simple, delicious, and always aligned with my health goals.
Final Thoughts on My Whole30 Journey
If you’re considering Whole30, I highly recommend giving it a try. It was challenging at first, but the lessons I learned have stayed with me long after completing the program. Whole30 has taught me to be mindful of what I eat, how I feel, and the lasting impact food has on my health.
Remember, it’s all about being aware of your body and making conscious choices that support your long-term wellness.
